Welcome
Castlemaine Clay Studio
The conceptual seed of Castlemaine Clay was planted when a huge top hat kiln was gifted to Mark Anstey of Lot 19. A group of ceramic artists, would-be ceramicists, and ‘lovers of mud’ decided that we needed something in Central Victoria where people could get their work fired and have a common space for ceramics.
These passionate potters started a non-for-profit member based community organisation run by generous and passionate volunteers. They wanted to bring the clay lovers of Castlemaine and surrounds together.
As Castlemaine Clay grew, it became clear that this was a pretty big undertaking, and a lot to ask of volunteers. In 2025, after much discussion, Castlemaine Clay gifted our assets to Lot 19 (a registered charity) so they now have ownership of everything our crew developed and grew over the years.
Local artist, ceramicist and arts manager Ella Hughes now runs the space under Lot 19’s auspice. She brings a wealth of experience and passion - just like our original founding potters.

♡ Mission Statement ♡
Castlemaine Clay is set up to provide space and resources that will foster a sense of community around ceramics.
Castlemaine Clay is an inclusive space, providing a meeting point for people to share ideas and skills amongst themselves. We aim to develop and sustain ceramic traditions as well as encourage new innovations.
To fulfil these objectives, we will be providing a studio for members, kilns for firing works, classes to learn new skills, talks and workshops with ceramic artists, plus much more. Castlemaine Clay is a group for anyone interested in ceramics, from absolute beginners to professional makers.
